Eating with the Seasons: How an Ayurvedic Doctor Reads Your Skin Through Each Season's Changing Doshas

Eating with the Seasons: How an Ayurvedic Doctor Reads Your Skin Through Each Season's Changing Doshas

Have you noticed your skin acts differently in July than it does in January? That's not random. As an Ayurvedic Doctor and licensed esthetician, I spend my days connecting what's happening on your face to what's happening in your gut and your surroundings. Eating with the seasons is one of the simplest ways to support that connection — and it's often the missing piece in your skin story.

Why Eating with the Seasons Matters for Your Skin

In Ayurveda, your body runs on three energies called doshas: Vata (wind), Pitta (fire), and Kapha (earth). Each season brings out a different dosha. When your meals don't match the season, digestion slows down. Poor digestion creates Ama — a kind of toxin buildup from food that isn't fully broken down. Ama doesn't stay in your gut. It shows up as breakouts, dullness, redness, or puffiness.

This is why I ask new clients about their meals before I ever look closely at their skin. The root cause of a flare-up rarely lives on the surface. Eating with the seasons keeps digestion steady, which keeps Ama from building up in the first place.

Your Skin-Body Type Changes With the Seasons

At MySelf Ayurvedic Spa, I use a system I call the 10 Skin-Body Types. It maps your unique combination of dosha, skin behavior, and life stage. Your type isn't fixed forever — it shifts a little with each season, the way a lake looks different in August than in December.

Someone with a Pitta-dominant Skin-Body Type might handle winter just fine but struggle every summer with redness and irritation. Someone with a Kapha-leaning type might feel congested and heavy every spring. Knowing your type helps us plan meals and herbal formulations that actually match what your skin needs right now, not six months ago.

Pitta Season: When Summer Heat Shows Up on Your Skin

Summer belongs to Pitta. If you have a Pitta-led mind, you probably already know the signs: you're sharp, focused, and intense, but heat makes you irritable fast. You might also notice a strange burst of energy late at night — what I call a second wind — right when your body should be winding down.

That evening spike is a problem for sleep, and poor sleep shows up on your skin as dullness and puffiness under the eyes. Pitta skin runs hot already, so summer just adds fuel to the fire — literally.

Cooling Your Pitta From the Inside Out

Here's what I recommend to Pitta-led clients here in Natick, especially through our hot New England summers:

  • Skip the midday sun and save workouts for early morning or evening, kept gentle — think a walk instead of an intense session.
  • End showers with cool, not ice-cold, water to calm an overheated nervous system.
  • Dim the lights and put screens away earlier so that late-evening second wind doesn't steal your sleep.
  • Try a cooling breath practice, like sheetali breath, or simply inhale for three counts and exhale for six.
  • Do a short self-bodywork at home with a cooling oil like coconut or sunflower before bed.

In my experience, Pitta also stores anger and frustration in the body, and that unreleased emotion affects the liver, which affects the skin. I often suggest a few minutes of journaling as part of an evening skin practice — not as an extra task, but as real skin support.

Vata and Kapha Seasons: Fall, Winter, and Spring

Fall and early winter bring out Vata, the wind energy. Skin often turns dry, thin, and easily irritated. This is the season for warm, grounding meals and richer herbal formulations with ingredients like sesame oil and ashwagandha.

Late winter into spring belongs to Kapha, the earth energy. Skin can feel heavy, congested, and prone to clogged pores. Lighter, warming meals with ginger and black pepper help clear things out, and this is often the best season for a guided detox cleanse.

Each seasonal shift calls for a different approach — which is exactly why eating with the seasons isn't a passing idea, but a steady practice throughout the year.

How MySelf Ayurvedic Spa Supports Your Seasonal Healing Journey

Reading skin this way takes both training in modern esthetics and study as an Ayurvedic skin doctor. Client by client, I put together protocols that follow the season and the Skin-Body Type in front of me.

In our Natick studio, that might include:

  • A calming shirodhara session, where warm oil flows over the forehead to settle a busy Pitta or Vata mind
  • A seasonal detox cleanse rooted in Panchakarma principles to clear built-up Ama
  • Kitchari, a simple, nourishing meal of mung beans, rice, and mild spices, recommended as part of your at-home reset
  • Custom herbal formulations matched to your dosha and the current season

None of this is guesswork. It's a structured way of looking at your body, informed by both Ayurveda and clinical skin care.
